Refinishing the stain on your kitchen cabinets is a great way to update your kitchen for a relatively inexpensive price. This process is pretty easy, and with a little time and patience, anyone can do it. The main cost for this will be in your tools and time. The first thing to do is remove the doors and any hardware that attaches them.
The next thing you need to do, is decide if you will be sanding off your old stain or if you will be using a chemical stripper. If you choose a stripper, you will want to use one that is more environmentally safe, since this is used inside of your home. soygel is one of these. To sand instead, simply use a medium grit sanding block to remove the urethane and stain. After that is removed, sand it gently with fine sandpapper and then finish it with a very fine steel wool. Wipe down your cabinets with a lint free cloth and remove any left over wood dust that you might have on it. Now you can have fun and start applying the stain. I prefer to use an old rag to apply stain but some people prefer to use brushes. This is simply a personal preference. You will need to choose if you want to use a water based stain or an oil based one. Both of them have advantages and disadvantages. The last step is to aply the urethane or polyurethane which seals and protects your woodwork. Make sure you allow the urethane time to dry between applications.
